The art of machining metal parts

The art of machining metal parts is a manufacturing process in which a material is shaped, cut, or modified to create a specific metal component according to a precise design. This process is carried out using specialized tools and machinery, depending on the required shape and final dimensions of the part.

A part is considered machined after undergoing the necessary treatment to be assembled into a larger system, whether it be a machine or a mechanical structure.

From plan to reality. Step-by-step guide to the art of machining

  • Design and planning. Before starting the machining process, a detailed design of the part must be created. This design can be provided by the client, or at Rectificados Mayer, our team of engineers and designers can develop the part internally  to meet specific requirements.

  • Material preparation. Once the prototype is approved, the most suitable material is selected based on the part’s intended function. Common materials include alloy steel, hard metal, aluminium, and high-speed-steel (HSS). Careful selection of tools and machinery is also essential for precission machining. At this stage, the raw material is cut into a rough shape, allowing room for the final machining process.

  • Initial machining. Usign specialized cutting, broaching, milling, chiselling, or carbide insrtets, the material is progressively removed to shape the part. In this process, various machining techniques may be applied depending on the requirements, including turning, milling, or drilling.

  • Finishing and final adjustments. Once the excess material is removed, additional operations are performed to achieve the final finish. These may include, grinding operations to achieve precise dimensional tolerances. Through threaded hole drilling or polishing to improve the surface and heat treatments to enhance the mechanical properties of the material.

Finally, the machined part undergoes a rigorous inspection process to ensure it meets all design specifications-
