What is industrial grinding?

Industrial grinding is a machining process that uses abrasive tools to remove material with high precision. Compared to traditional chip removal methods, grinding offers superior accuracy and produces smoother surface finishes.

The process involves the use of grinding wheels (abrasive discs). Once the part is cleaned and free from impurities, the grinding machine removes the excess material to achieve the desired finish and dimensional tolerances.

In this article, we will explore the most common types of industrial grinding techniques.

5 common types of industrial grinding

Below are the main grinding methods used in precision machining:

  • Between centers grinding. This method refers to how the workpiece is held in the machine. It is commonly used for external cylindrical grinding, ensuring precise concentricity and symmetry.

  • Through-feed centerless grinding. Also used for external cylindrical grinding, this technique is ideal for high-volume production runs. It offers excellent efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and high productivity.

  • In-feed centerless grinding. This technique is similar to through-feed grinding but is applied to specific sections of the part, making it suitable for complex geometries or parts with multiple diameters.

  • Knurling. This method is a cold-forming process where the workpiece is pressed between rollers. As it rotates, the surface is deformed to replicate the roller pattern, creating grip-enhancing textures.

  • Thread rolling. A cold-forming process used to produce threads of various lengths. It ensures uniformity, strength, and precision, making it ideal for high-performance industrial applications.
